What does it mean to persevere?

Well, before I continue let me give the dictionary definition of the word "persevere". To persevere means to remain constant to a purpose, idea, or task in the face of obstacles or discouragement. It also means to refuse to stop or to continue to (try to) do something in spite of difficulties.

Lately, my oldest has been struggling in school with two of her classes. It is largely because of a boy. Not the boy’s fault at all. It is just the affect that this boy has on her. Yes, she thinks she is in love. Weren't we all once? But you have to admire her determination. Not to do what my husband and I want her to do, but what she wants to do. Being a mom has taught me one thing if nothing else...teenagers are always right at least in their mind.

About a month or so she was caught in a lie. Nothing new I’m sure, but it was worse than normal. She lied to my husband and me about who was bringing her home from a National Honor Society event she was helping to host at her school. She said it was her best friend’s parents bringing her home. It wasn’t. Since the boy goes to another school, I asked her how he was at her school. She said “He must have seen it on my Facebook page.” He didn’t. When I asked the boy, he admitted she had invited him.

When our Taekwondo instructor learned of her deception, she had a talk with her and gave her an assignment do to. She was also demoted a belt for at least a month as punishment for breaking the tenant of integrity. I will discuss the five tenants in a future post.

So what does this have to do with perseverance? Everything. In spite of the situation, she persevered. In spite of being demoted for lying, she persevered. I do not condone her lying, but I admire her for her perseverance. She has remained constant to a purpose.

So when you feel you cannot keep going, remember that if we have the desire of a love-crazed teenager, we can overcome anything and persevere!
